Because the weather has been so warm and just turned cold you have more wildlife trying to get in, whether it’s mice, squirrels or raccoons. Be on the alert for mice, which can slip in through tiny holes and invade your home.
Mice are starting to move inside later than normal this year. Evidence of these tiny, sneaky inhabitants include:
- Mouse dropping in cabinets or behind refrigerators, and garage corners.
- Chewed holes around the edge of your garage going into your wallboards.
- Shredded papers in drawers that are evidence of mice trying to nest.
- Holes chewed in food packaging in cabinets.
Winter Mouse Infestation
Wondering how the mice are getting inside your house for the winter? Check the outside of your home for any holes going under sidewalks or foundation or under siding that are at least an inch in diameter, and make sure you are sealing those. The best way to seal a hole and keep out mice is to fill them with steel wool and then spray an expansion foam in with the steel wool. The mice will try to chew through the foam, and the steel wool will hurt their teeth and they will give up. The foam will lock the steel wool in place so they can’t pull it out.
